About

Howard began his journey into square dancing in 1980 and quickly found his passion extended to calling.

Just two years later, in July 1982, he and his wife Brenda established Crossroad Squares, a club that has thrived for over two decades. Over the years, they have raised two children and conducted more than 16 beginner classes, nurturing the next generation of dancers.

In 1990, Howard and Brenda expanded their calling efforts by launching Southern Cross Plus, which operated successfully for 15 years. In 1998, they added Southern Cross A to their portfolio, catering to advanced dancers.

Howard has been a dedicated member of the Victorian Callers’ Association (VCA) since 1982. Over 23 years of involvement, he has held every executive position and is currently serving as Secretary. He has been a key figure on the Skills and Development Committee and an original member of the Accreditation Board. His initiative helped establish the now-annual VCA Variety Night, a popular event that raises funds for charity.

As a leader in programming and training, Howard has served as Programme Manager for four State Conventions and has mentored many aspiring callers in the art and craft of calling and stage presentation.

Howard’s contributions extend to the national level through his work with the Australian Callers Federation (ACF), which he joined in 1991. He served as President (1995–1998), Editor of Callerlink (1992–1997), Treasurer (1998–2001), and State Coordinator, and he remains an active member of the ACF Board. He was instrumental in launching the ACF Get Together, providing a welcoming space for callers to network and receive feedback.

A fixture in the Australian square dance community, Howard attended his first National Convention in 1981 and has participated in nearly every one since. He played key roles on various committees, including:

  • 1987 – Publicity Officer

  • 1991 – Venue Manager

  • 2000 – Programme Manager

  • 2005 – Convenor

Known for his commitment to practical caller training, Howard generously shares his knowledge and energy to support the growth of others in the calling community. He has entertained dancers across Australia and New Zealand, consistently advocating for the development and visibility of square dancing both in Victoria and nationally.

Beyond square dancing, Howard enjoys playing and watching cricket, keeping statistics, discovering trivia, spending time with friends, and most of all, cherishing moments with his family.

Taken from his nomination for the National Square Dance Society of Australia, Roll of Honor in 2006
